The First Symptom of Parkinson’s Disease That Occurs Before Muscle Stiffness Has Been Discovered

The first sign of Parkinson’s disease that happens before stiff muscles has been found.

Before a person loses motor function and gets tremors and stiff muscles, which are signs of Parkinson’s disease, researchers have noticed another change.

Scientists from the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences have found the first sign of Parkinson’s disease, which comes before tremors or stiff muscles. As they point out, Parkinson’s disease is the neurodegenerative disease that progresses the fastest in the world.

However, if it is found quickly, it can be better managed. But researchers have noticed “changes in speech” that are signs of the disease before some motor function is lost and tremors and stiff muscles start to happen.

The First Symptom of Parkinson's Disease That Occurs Before Muscle Stiffness Has Been Discovered

The first sign of Parkinson’s disease can be found in the way a person talks – Changes in speech often come before problems with how the body works. So, Dr. Rytis Maskeliunas of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences said that changes in speech could be the first sign of the disease.
Professor Virgilius Ulozas from the Department of Ear, Nose, and Throat at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Lithuania noticed that people with early Parkinson’s disease start to speak more quietly.

Their speech also becomes more monotone, less expressive, slower, and more broken up, making it harder to understand. As for changes in speech, the research study says that as the disease gets worse, hoarseness, stuttering, slurred pronunciation, and the loss of pauses between words are all signs of a worsening voice.

Maskeliunas, a researcher, stressed that the team of scientists is not making a replacement for a regular patient exam.

He says that their method is meant to make it easier to find the disease early and check how well treatment is working. By analysing and evaluating speech signals with the help of artificial intelligence, it can make a diagnosis of Parkinson’s in seconds.

A microphone was used in a soundproof booth to record the speech of people who were healthy and people who had Parkinson’s disease. So far, the scientists say, their method can tell the difference between people with Parkinson’s disease and healthy people by analysing their speech.

The algorithm for figuring out if someone has Parkinson’s disease could also be used at home.

Knowing that there is still a long and difficult way to go before the model from the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences can be used in everyday clinical practise, the researchers are trying to increase the size of the sample being studied to get more information about whether the proposed algorithm is better than other ways of diagnosing Parkinson’s.

Also, it will be important to see if the computer algorithm works well in a doctor’s office or a patient’s home, where the conditions are similar to those in the lab.

Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease, and the first signs of it are:

Parkinson’s disease often makes it hard to sleep at night. Tremors, stiffness, pain, and restless legs syndrome could be to blame.

Loss of smell is another sign that this neurodegenerative disease may be present. This can happen years before any other symptoms show up.
Due to changes in the brain, a person with Parkinson’s disease may start to write smaller and smaller. Their handwriting changes, and the letters get smaller and smaller.

When you have an overactive bladder and feel like you have to go right away, you have to go to the bathroom a lot, especially at night.
Parkinson’s disease can make it hard to keep your body in sync or make it hard to walk.
